St Joseph Shrine
Product Description
I am honoured to offer this handcrafted St Joseph Shrine, a companion to the Marian Shrine, dedicated to the silent guardian of the Holy Family whose steadfast protection inspires us in our own trials. Drawing from sacred tradition, it features a layered depiction of St Joseph, rendered in light birchwood against a single piece of Jarrah meticulously milled to create space for the artwork, evoking his humble strength and purity.
At the forefront stands St Joseph, his head turned right to symbolise his watchful gaze outward as protector. When placed to the right of a central crucifix or image of Christ on your altar, with Jesus in the middle, St Joseph looks away from the family, ever alert for danger, recalling his vigilant role during the Holy Family's escape to Egypt. The backdrop of white lilies honours his chaste heart and role as foster father, while a halo encircles him in reverence. At the top, a carved lily emblem echoes his purity and the tools of his carpentry trade, transformed into symbols of grace. The base bears the inscription "Ite ad Ioseph," inviting us to "Go to Joseph" for aid, as Pharaoh once urged in times of famine (Genesis 41:55), now applied to this heavenly patron's intercession.
I select Jarrah, our esteemed Western Australian hardwood (Eucalyptus marginata), for its rich redbrown tones that deepen over time, its density of around 820 kg per cubic metre, and its natural resistance to decay, termites, and borers. These qualities ensure this shrine becomes a lasting heirloom, reflecting St Joseph's enduring fidelity to God's plan.
Dimensions
Measuring 13 cm tall, 7 cm wide, and 2 cm thick, it is perfectly suited for your home altar or prayer corner, where it can inspire daily reflection.
The Holy Family's Journey to Egypt
The Gospel account of the Holy Family's flight to Egypt reveals a profound act of obedience and protection under dire circumstances, a reality that underscores St Joseph's title as Protector of the Holy Family. Warned by an angel in a dream, Joseph arose at once to lead Mary and the infant Jesus away from Herod's murderous intent, embarking on a gruelling trek from Bethlehem southward into Egypt, likely aiming for safe Jewish communities along the Nile Delta or beyond.
This journey spanned approximately 400 to 500 kilometres, traversing harsh landscapes that included the arid Judean wilderness, the scorching Sinai Desert, and rugged coastal paths. Travelling primarily on foot or by donkey, as was common for humble families like theirs, the trip would have taken seven to ten days or more, depending on pace and rests needed for a young mother recovering from childbirth and a newborn babe. The physical toll was immense: enduring blistering daytime heat often exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, freezing nights, and relentless sandstorms that could obscure paths and irritate eyes and skin. Water sources were scarce, forcing reliance on sparse oases or carried supplies, while food would have been limited to simple provisions like bread, dates, or dried fruits, risking malnutrition or exhaustion if delays occurred.
Beyond the environmental hardships, the route along ancient trade caravans was fraught with human perils. Bandits and highwaymen lurked in remote areas, preying on vulnerable travellers, especially those appearing defenceless, a carpenter with his wife and child would have been an easy target for theft, assault, or worse, amid the political instability of Roman-occupied lands and Herod's spies. Wild animals, such as jackals or serpents, added to the threats in the untamed wilderness. Yet, through divine providence and Joseph's prudent leadership, they navigated these dangers, his carpentry-honed resilience and faith serving as their shield. This shrine's design, with St Joseph facing outward, echoes that protective vigilance, reminding us to entrust our own families to his intercession in times of trial.
Biblical Foundations of This Devotional
Rooted in Scripture, the shrine's design calls us to honour St Joseph's protective role:
Matthew 2:13-15: An angel warns Joseph in a dream to flee to Egypt with Mary and Jesus, escaping Herod's massacre. He rises immediately, leading them by night on a perilous journey of about 400-500 kilometres from Bethlehem, likely taking 7-10 days or more on foot or donkey through arid deserts and rugged terrain, facing scarcities of water and food.
Matthew 2:19-23: After Herod's death, Joseph guides the family back to Nazareth, navigating similar dangers like bandits and highwaymen who preyed on travellers. As vulnerable targets, a carpenter with a young mother and infant, they relied on his courage and divine guidance for safety.
Genesis 41:55: "Go to Joseph," Pharaoh's command during famine, adapted in tradition to invoke St Joseph's aid as Provider and Protector of the Holy Family.
Matthew 1:18-25: Joseph's righteous obedience in taking Mary as wife, showcasing his title as "Terror of Demons" and guardian against spiritual and physical threats.
Luke 2:41-52: His watchful care during the finding in the Temple, underscoring his paternal vigilance that mirrors his protective stance in this shrine.
These passages invite us to seek St Joseph's intercession, entrusting our families to his safeguarding as he shielded the Christ Child.
