Southern Cross Jarrah Cross
It brings me great joy to share this Jarrah cross, where I have engraved the Southern Cross stars to celebrate the beauty of our Australian skies woven with the truth of Christ's light, much like those heavenly markers that have led seekers to hope and home. Made from one solid block of fine Western Australian Jarrah hardwood, it serves as a quiet emblem of God's watchful care over us down here.
The stars are meticulously engraved into the cross's arms, capturing the Crux formation with precision to honour both our nation's emblem and the heavenly lights that point to God's creation. This design invites reflection on how the heavens declare His glory, as in Psalm 19:1, "The heavens proclaim the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." I finish the cross with a protective varnish to enhance its natural lustre, while the back is sealed in beeswax for a smooth touch, complete with my maker's mark and the year MMXXV in Roman numerals.
Each Jarrah cross showcases the wood's unique grain patterns, from swirling waves that evoke ancient riverbeds to subtle shifts in tone from light honeyed streaks to deep crimson depths, often accented by natural gum veins or knots that add organic character without compromising strength. These features not only highlight Jarrah's renowned durability and resistance to decay but also mirror the diverse paths of faith, making every piece a one-of-a-kind heirloom. Equipped with a hanging hook, it is perfect for adorning a wall in your home, chapel, or as a gift that blends patriotism with piety.
As an Australian symbol, the Southern Cross holds deep meaning for our land, prominently featured on the national flag since 1901 as a representation of the constellation that has guided sailors, explorers, and Indigenous Australians for millennia. Visible year-round in our southern hemisphere skies, it has long served as a navigational beacon, much like the Star of Bethlehem led the Magi, reminding us of God's providence in the vast Australian outback. Sourced from Western Australia's native forests, the Jarrah timber itself echoes this heritage, a hardy wood that thrives in our unique soils and embodies the resilience of our nation under the same stars. This cross thus becomes a prayerful tribute to our country's Christian foundations, fostering a sense of unity between faith and the land we call home.
Dimensions
Measuring 20 cm tall, 13 cm wide, and 2 cm thick, this cross offers a balanced presence suited for personal devotional spaces or as a focal point in a family room.
Biblical Foundations of This Devotional
Rooted in Scripture, the cross's design encourages contemplation on celestial signs and guidance:
Psalm 19:1-2: "The heavens proclaim the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge," reflecting the stars as witnesses to divine majesty.
Matthew 2:1-2: The Magi follow the star to find the newborn King, symbolising how heavenly lights lead the faithful to Christ, akin to the Southern Cross guiding travellers.
Genesis 1:14-16: God creates the stars "to serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years," underscoring their role in His ordered creation.
Job 38:31-32: "Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades? Can you loosen Orion's belt? Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons?" highlighting God's sovereignty over the stars.
Revelation 22:16: Christ as "the bright Morning Star," inviting us to see stellar symbols as pointers to His eternal light.
These passages inspire us to view the Southern Cross as a heavenly reminder of God's guiding hand in our lives.
